The People
Founder of the Pain Relief Foundation, Sampson Lipton
died aged 72 on December 6th, 1994. Sam was a pioneer
in the treatment of chronic pain, an international figure
in the pain world and a teacher and mentor to many pain
doctors.
In 1953 he set up a Pain Relief Service in Liverpool despite
encountering many administrative difficulties. Such was
his determination and charisma. Sam was the director
of Walton Centre Pain Clinic for nearly 30 years. In
1978 his work led to the founding of the Pain Research
Institute.
Sam Lipton was Hunterian Professor at the Royal College
of Surgeons in 1981; a Founder Member of the International
Association for the Study of Pain and elected one of
its first Honary members in 1989; First President of
the World Society of Pain Clinicians (1984-1991) and
Second President of the Pain Society of Great Britain.
He was appointed OBE in 1984.
